My Aim

I aim to share the joy that is sewing and creating things for yourself and your loved ones. There is so much fun in the process, in the learning and the problem solving. This is knowledge that has been passed down countless generations, since humanity was humanity, and I count it as an honour to continue to pass on this ancient skill, this silent and underappreciated necessity.

Clothing these days is seen as disposable, and its not until you make clothing for yourself that you understand the skill, knowledge, work and time that goes into making every single thing we put on our bodies. Clothing being cheap, accessible and disposable is a very new idea, and it is harming our environment and our mental health, and I want to help bring back that appreciation.

My name is Niamh Saoirse Bain. My scottish father gave me the middle name Saoirse, meaning freedom as gaeilge, because the day I was born, Scotland got its own parliament. Freedom and fighting for it is in my name and nature, and I have passed this name onto my business, where I hope togive people the confidence to grasp their freedom to try, to learn and experiment and empower themselves with ancient knowledge. I have always been creative, and found sewing at a very dark period of my life, where all else seemed pointless, and it gave me the confidence and focus to keep going. It is not entirely reductive to say that sewing saved me.

I have had the priveledge to learn in Mallow College of Design and Tailoring, and have had knowledge passed to me through so many sources, conversations and videos that it would be impossible to list and remember them all, but I will be forever in their debt for sharing their knowledge with me.
